Cyprus is moving from \u201cAI talk\u201d to real national direction. The Cyprus Shipping Chamber has backed the proposed National AI Strategy 2032, and that matters for anyone running operations, managing risk, or planning growth in a data-driven economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Surely many will say AI is only for tech companies. But the draft shows how AI could touch fuel use, maintenance, safety, and even how organisations demonstrate compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) met Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation and Technology Demetris Skourides. During the visit, Skourides shared the strategy with members of the chamber\u2019s Digitalisation Committee, and the committee discussed practical proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It already examines technology and communications that affect shipping companies and vessel operations, including satellite links between ships and shore. It also follows the International Maritime Organisation\u2019s work on navigation, communications and search and rescue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The draft strategy includes specific targets for shipping. It points to 10\u201320% fuel savings and 30\u201340% lower maintenance costs, driven by better planning and digital models of vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That could come from route planning that considers weather, currents, fuel prices and vessel performance. It also references predictive maintenance that uses sensor data to spot issues before equipment fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s the point many organisations miss: the draft is clear that qualified professionals should retain final authority over decisions. AI can support and flag risks, but people stay accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It also calls for independent evaluation and clear grounds to withdraw systems that fail safety, compliance or performance requirements. In other words, AI is not a \u201cset and forget\u201d tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because the reality is this: if your business relies on systems that affect safety or regulatory duties, governance is not optional. It is part of operational confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The strategy proposes a shared maritime data space where companies can contribute anonymised datasets for AI training. The goal is to strengthen AI capability while protecting commercial knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That approach raises practical questions for businesses: what data can be shared, how it is anonymised, and who sets the rules. It is also where secure data infrastructure and accountability become more than policy words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If AI services are planned across Cyprus and linked to the EU, businesses may also need to review how they document data flows and decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The public consultation on the proposed National AI Strategy 2032 approaches its August 31 deadline. Businesses, professional bodies, researchers and citizens can submit comments through the government\u2019s e-consultation platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
